Denver, CO: Why Go
Editor's Note: With snow already reported in Keystone, the slopes are opening early this season, and you can be among the first arrivals to get access to the deepening piles of fresh powder.
Editor's favorite watering hole: The Mexican food at Rio's is good, but the margaritas are to die for! It's a known fact that you can only drink up to three, or else you won't even be able to stumble out the door.
Local tipple: Coors Light is the drink of choice (it is brewed in the Rockies), but the many microbrews around town are a close second (and are our personal favorites). Take the short tour at the Coors Brewery and get straight to the samples.
Get your game on: "Rock Pile" tickets for bleacher seats at Coors Field are only $4, which is almost as good as free.
Did we mention it's free? Red Rocks Park is located at 6,200 feet above sea level and has countless trails. Its naturally formed, open-air amphitheater is considered the eighth world wonder.
Good to know: Although Denver is officially on the plains next to the mountains, it's still at a high altitude. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Try aspirin or drink caffeine to curb altitude headaches, and wear SPF!
Chill-out spot: If your definition of chilling out means biking, running, playing ultimate Frisbee, and such, you?ll find like-minded folks in Washington Park on the weekends.
Where the locals go: Dive bars like Candle Light Tavern, with darts, pool, foosball, and more are always packed. Otherwise, follow locals outside. Try rock climbing, biking, running, trail running, kayaking, hiking--you name it, it's here.
Local flavor: Steak and Colorado lamb are always tops in the Mile High City, but if you're craving Japanese, then Sushi Den on Pearl Street, is the place to see and be seen (yes, even though CO is land-locked).
Dress code: When in doubt, wear jeans. The REI flagship store is here, so you also can't go wrong with the outdoorsy look either.
Recommendations & Suggestions
Denver Museum of National History
2001 Colorado Boulevard
Explore the fifth-largest natural history museum in the the United. Experience the museum's most popular exhibit, the "Prehistoric Journey," which traces the history of life on earth through 3.5 billion years. This $7.7 million exhibition includes 17,000 square feet of display space and a working fossil laboratory with public viewing areas. The "Explore Colorado" and the "Edge of the Wild" exhibits examine the diverse geography and animal life that exists in Colorado. There is also an IMAX theatre located in the museum which has rotating film schedules. The price of admission is $7 for adults and $4.50 for children ages 3-12.
Echo Lake
At 10,600 feet elevation on Mt. Evans, Echo Lake is a crystal clear high alpine lake which is known for excellent fishing, great hiking, and an abundance of wildlife. Pack a lunch and enjoy one of the lake's comfortable picnic areas and walk off the sandwich with a quick hike around the 3/4 mile trail wich circles the lake. Echo Lake is located along Highway 103 just north of the Mount Evans Entrance station.
Mt. Evans
America's highest paved road was completed in 1927. A trip up to the summit of Mount Evans is an experience you will not soon forget. The best time to drive up the road is early morning, as parking is limited at the summit. Be sure to bring extra clothes as the weather can change rapidly at high elevations. Also, as with all high altitude experiences, altitude sickness is a real threat and should not be taken lightly. Regardless of fitness level, "lightheadness" and disorientation often occur at this elevation. You may faint or under-estimate other dangers. If you experience any of these symptoms exercise caution and return to a lower elevation. If symptoms do not subside, seek medical assistance.
Directions to Mt. Evans from Denver:
Go West on US InterState 70 to Idaho Springs and take the "Mt. Evans" exit (#240). Follow South on State 103 from Idaho Springs to Mount Evans Entrance (15 miles).
Call the Ranger Station for road opening and closure information at 303.567.3000.
