Orlando, FL: Why Go

Orlando, FL: This Land is Your Land-o (Flight Not Included)
From rollercoaster forest to gulf-stream waterslide, Orlando was made for you and me. Come visit and live out your food fantasies, test your fears, and indulge your sense of delight and wonder in the

Dress code: If you're pounding park pavement, wear breathable clothing, comfortable shoes, sunglasses, and sunscreen (Mickey Mouse ears, optional). And don't forget an umbrella for those sudden tropical downpours.

One phrase worth knowing: Fastpass! With one of these in hand, skipping the lines at top attractions is not only on the up-and-up, but encouraged. It's a ticketed reservation system that sets up a prearranged time to come back to the ride of your choice without a wait--for no extra charge.

Where to get your adrenaline rush: At Disney-MGM Studios, Lights, Motors, Action! is an extreme stunt show on hand for the 50th Anniversary celebration. Cars, motorcycles, and jet skies burn rubber and give a movie-worthy performance right before your eyes, complete with eye-popping pyrotechnics and hair-raising high-speed chase scenes.

Where to recuperate afterwards: Get the signature treatment--beguilingly called Mystical Forest Therapies--at the spa at Saratoga Springs Resort, which includes 30 minutes of muscle-numbing Swedish massage combined with 30 minutes of relaxing reflexology.

Where to blow a paycheck: While the admission price to Discovery Cove is steep, it's worth it to spend a day getting up close and personal with marine creatures like dolphins, seals, and a stunning variety of rainbow-colored fish with no crowds, no lines, and no hassles.

Best place to end dinner with a bang: Walk out onto the outdoor terrace or stay put at the table when they dim the lights at the California Grill. The views of the nightly fireworks over the Magic Kingdom castle provide a "happily ever after" ending to an inspired meal at this hip restaurant that?s known for its great wine list.

You can take it with you: For kids (or precocious adults, for that matter) who want to bring home the magic, you can purchase exact replicas of Cinderella's dress, tricked-out pirate costumes, trading pins, and innovative toys galore at the Marketplace in Downtown Disney.

Recommendations & Suggestions

Astronaut Memorial Planetarium and Observatory
1519 Clearlake Road
Phone: 321.433.7373

It's appropriate that one of the largest public-access observatories in Florida is located near the Kennedy Space Center. View objects in the solar system and beyond through a 24-inch telescope or catch one of the films offered in the Planetarium's two theaters. Visit The Science Quest Hall's exhibit of scales calibrated to other planets. The observatory and exhibit hall are free; inquire about prices for planetarium and film shows.

Canaveral National Seashore
Route 402
Phone: 407. 267.1110

The Canaveral National Seashore is the longest stretch of undeveloped coast on Florida's East coast. Popular for the presence of up to hundreds of sea turtles and oddly nude sun worshippers in the extreme northern area, a visit to this pristine coastline is a must when visiting Cocoa Beach. Parking is $5.00 per car.

Emeril's Orlando
Universal City Walk
Phone: 407.224.2424

The tropical vibe at this celebrity chef outpost yields a more relaxed Emeril's (if you've tried to get into the restaurant in New Orleans, you'll know what we mean.) Of course, the food is equally phenomenal and is only enhanced by a slight tropical twist. The tasting menu, which offers such delights as crawfish-and-cornbread-stuffed quail, is $130.00 for two people.

Typhoon Lagoon - Walt Disney World
Walt Disney World Resort
Phone: 407.560.9283

This enormous water park is as diverse as Walt Disney World itself, offering a range of activities for visitors of all ages. Swim with sharks, sting rays and tropical fish in Shark Reef, ride the winding waterslides, drop nearly 50 feet straight down the Humunga Kowabunga, or go for a lazy innertube ride around a mellow winding river. One could easily spend an entire day at this multifaceted park.

Walt Disney World - Magic Kingdom

How do you explain this American classic? The Magic Kingdom is divided into 7 lands, each with a feel all its own. Major attractions include Adventureland's Jungle Cruise, Frontierland's Splash Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain RR, as well as Tomorrowland's Space Mountain. Go north, go south, the Disney complex offers endless combinations that all equal a good time.

Walt Disney World - Pleasure Island
Walt Disney World

Pleasure Island is a bustling metropolis, with six acres of clubs, restaurants, stage shows and boutiques. This giant party playground fills any entertainment void Disney's sprawling parks may have overlooked. Since guests must be 18 years old (or accompanied by a parent) to be admitted to most clubs, Pleasure Island offers a great Disney getaway for grownups.
