Detroit, MI: Why Go

Detroit, MI: Room & Car -- Eight Miles High (Flight Not Included)
Shedding its tough and tenacious attitude, Detroit is high on the rebound with a theater district second only to Manhattan, vintage buildings getting an extreme make-over, while Motown reigns supreme.

Did we mention it's free? On a sunny day, make sure to pass some time at Hart Plaza where thousands of freighters from all over the world pass annually. Stop by Dodge Fountain where one million gallons of water per hour are released from the over 300 nozzles and jets.

Local Secret: Hosted one Sunday every month, try to catch brunch at Detroit Institute of Art, where singers like Olivia Duval and Darkwood Consort perform Bach favorites. After the event, be sure to check out the incredible Diego Riviera murals.

Get out of dodge: Although all the lake towns of Michigan are quite picturesque, the most beautiful has to be Traverse City, known for its tranquil waters and sweet cherries.

History lesson: The 5,000-seat Fox Theatre is a marvel of Art Deco architecture, and after its $8 million renovation to renew this Thai-Byzantine structure (built in 1928) to its former self, the city of Detroit is quite proud of the glitzy, yet glamorous building that mimics an Arabian tent.

Place we love, even if it's touristy: If you love the Temptations, Smokey Robinson, and the Supremes, then stop off at the Motown Historical Museum or "Hitsville U.S.A" where the first chords of Motown exploded onto the scene in the 1960s.

The real deal: The birth of Detroit-based hip-hop took off on 8 Mile Road in Detroit, made even infamous by rapper Eminem. These eight lanes separate the city from the suburbs, and are considered to be the bargain hunter's Rodeo Drive.

Recommendations & Suggestions

Cyprus Taverna
579 Monroe
Phone: 313.961.1550

On Monroe Street, the headquarters for Detroit's "Greektown," there are too many Greek joints to count. But if you were going to make a list, Cyprus Taverna should be at the top. With a Cypriot flair many of the other restaurants lack, Cyprus Taverna whips up amazing food in a beautiful environment the Detroit News calls "a fitting oasis."

Fox Theatre Detroit
2211 Woodward
Phone: 313.596.3200

One of Detroit's best live music concert venues, the Fox Theatre is known both for its music and its architecture. The ten-story neon marquee outside is just the beginning as you step into the lobby which will dazzle even the most jaded concert-goer. Six stories tall, the ornate neo-Byzantine space is decorated with 300,000 glass "jewels" and a two-ton chandelier.

Box office is open Mon-Fri 10am-6pm Sat and Sun at 10am, only if there is an event.
