Phoenix, AZ: Why Go

Photo by Lisa Van Bockstaele Photo by Philipp Kuecuekyan Photo by Philipp Kuecuekyan
Phoenix, AZ: Fly & Drive -- Risen from the Ashes
It's no myth that this desert oasis is a haven for sunrise-hikers, spa-worshippers, and fans of all flavors Southwestern.

Chill-out spot: The Desert Botanical Gardens aren't just for rocks and prickly cacti. The oasis constantly has something in bloom, and is located within Papago Park, a prime place to relax, regroup, and take in red-rock vistas.

Bang for your buck: Dig into to a feast of Southwestern BBQ basted in a subtly sweet sauce with an orange tang at Honeybears BBQ, where you'll only find locals, and a massive, hearty meal with dessert only sets you back eight bucks.

Best place to blow a paycheck: If your shoulders permanently hunch at ear-height, splash out on a trip to the Willow Stream Spa. Once the skilled spa technicians do their magic, you'll be so relaxed, you won't even flinch when it's time to pay.

Place we love, even if it's touristy: Architectural great Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin West is a stone structure which blends into the mountains of Scottsdale as fluidly as a dessert iguana changes its colors. Meant to be a winter home to Wright and his students, Taliesin West still houses many aspiring architects schooled in Wrights "learning by doing" method.

Local Secret: La Grande Orange Grocery is a local, French-style bakery and grocery where you can enjoy Southwestern pizza, heart-conscious sandwiches and salads, and desserts that aren't.

Get out of dodge: About three hours outside of Phoenix are the tranquil, red rocks of Sedona. Spend the day hiking along cacti, horseback-riding through canyons, or taking a pink jeep tour to impossibly high (and equally beautiful) elevations.
